midnight capital to coast bike ride
having frustratingly withdrawn from the cycle 2 cannes bike ride due to concerns about my fiscal status; which turned out to be a very good idea but that is for another time, i was left with my beautiful bike gathering building dust in our slowly changing home and little idea what to do with it. obviously i could just go out for a ride, but having attempted that just after christmas with the scout and almost ending up in tears as the blood returned to my fingers having cut the journey short and returned home as fast as our freezing lungs would allow. a meagre 5 mile round trip was all we managed. the thought of heading out again in the freezing winter weather is not really filling me with much inspiration.
a little while later, in the warmth of the office, my single scout buddy friend sent through details for a midnight bike ride from london to brighton. i have been toying with the idea of signing up to the british heart foundation london to brighton in june or july, but attempting the whole brighton to london to brighton thing as i have completed both runs on distinctly separate occasions and in distinctly different times; 8 hours and 4 hours if you are interested. and the 4 hour one was a much shorter journey as i didn't head into central london. but this one is sooner and at night time! thankfully we both got accepted onto the ride, as places are limited, and fifty of us will be raising money for the martlets charity.

the ride is set for the 26th march, which as the beautiful emma will be in dubai means i won't be hungover (it's her birthday the day before); but i also have to forgo the first golf day of 2010. a big shame that, but a wise decision as playing a full round of golf in the heart of essex for four or five hours is probably not the best preparation for an 8 hour midnight bike ride!
the fifty charity riders will join proper cyclists from the cheam and morden cyclists' touring club who regularly undertake these rides to various coastal areas around the country from the capital; and all in the midst of the witching hour. the plan is to set off from hyde park corner at midnight on the 26th and head down to brighton, arriving just in time for a hearty breakfast on marine drive.
over the next few weeks i will attempt to get back to a reasonable level of fitness as i haven't been to the gym in at least 3 months and they are still taking my money. in addition to that i will be raising as much money as possible for the martlets; so here, as promised, is the link for my just giving page http://www.justgiving.com/benmurdoch please give as generously as possible as all money raised will go to an extremely good cause.
wish me luck folks, i will probably give a brief blog / post / essay of what the ride was like. but for now, as well as the training, i need to think of something to do in london until midnight on that 26th that doesn't involve drinking.
